Installing a home security alarm is a great step in protecting your home. But the problem is that when a person tries to break in and the alarm goes off, they may still have the time to get away with something valuable. Many people worry about the aesthetic of their home and therefore don’t display any sign that they have a security alarm system, but they should.

If a burglar doesn’t realize you have a home security alarm, they are going to attempt to get in. And once in, they may still go for items even if your alarm goes off. But if you  make sure to add the sign or sticker that comes with your system to the front of your home, to warn people, it will deter them from even trying in the first place, which is the best case scenario. You want to make it obvious there’s an alarm installed, from the moment someone can see the front door of your home.

When it comes to your home security, you need to make sure to take steps to really protect yourself, your family, and your belongings. And that includes taking the time to really be secure about the biggest thing keeping someone out of your home: the lock and key for your front door.

The first step you should take when moving into a new home is to change the locks. Why? Well, not only does the realtor possibly still have a copy of the keys, but the old owner may too. And you don’t know who else may have gotten their hands on a copy. You don’t want to find that someone can just let himself into your home.

If you should ever lose your keys, you should change your locks immediately. Sure, there’s a chance that no one will pick them up or won’t know where you live. But you always risk the chance of a break in, especially if you lose them in a place where people do know where you live. Sadly, the highest percentage of burglaries are committed by people who knew the home owners.

And if the home security alarm attached to your front door often goes off on its own, make sure to get it fixed as soon as possible and let your neighbors know. Otherwise, they may ignore the alarm if they are used to it going off constantly by accident.

For a long time, I assumed my home was safe because we lived in a very quiet neighborhood where, well, nothing really happened. Until I came home one day to find out that someone had been snooping in our driveway, reportedly checking the backyard for a way into the house. I was rattled, as was my dad. We never had a home security alarm system because we just never thought it was necessary. Break-ins in our area were unheard of. But then I realized it only takes one, and if it’s your home, it’s a devastating experience.
